🔴 A new museum experience in Uzbekistan: historical sources in a digital database

A scholarly discussion was held at the Center for Islamic Civilisation in Uzbekistan, which is under construction in Tashkent, focusing on the exhibition “The Second Renaissance – The Timurid Era”. Leading scholars from the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, the National University of Uzbekistan, and other prestigious research institutions took part.
The exhibition showcases historical documents, written sources, diplomatic letters, archaeological findings, and unique artifacts from the era of Amir Temur and the Timurid dynasty. Created through a blend of modern information technologies and national traditions, the exhibition not only presents historical sources but also serves as a platform for scientific research.
Several significant facts and sources were specially highlighted during the discussion:
➖ Amir Temur’s decree – a historical document preserved at the Institute of Oriental Studies.
➖ Diplomatic correspondence with King Charles VI of France in 1402.
➖ Observations of Papal envoy Ivo Grinlo at Temur’s court.
“One of the main exhibitions of the Center is The Second Renaissance – The Timurid Era. This exhibition contains original historical documents reflecting international relations, internal politics, and economic ties during Amir Temur’s reign. Organized in accordance with modern museum technologies and classical museology standards, it not only displays historical sources but also provides a convenient platform for scholarly research”, said Sanjar G‘ulomov, Senior Researcher at the Abu Rayhan Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
The Center is transforming into a major academic hub, opening research opportunities for foreign scholars as well. Information about every exhibit is compiled in a unified electronic database, making it a unique resource for researchers.

Khursid Fayziev, Director of the State Museum of Timurid History:
“The Center for Islamic Civilisation is not just a museum — it is a treasure house of discoveries. Every artifact is a vivid witness to the spiritual heritage of our people and a guiding source of knowledge for the youth”.
At the conclusion of the discussion, scholars proposed measures to further enrich the content of the exhibition and improve the system of scholarly annotations. These proposals will soon be submitted to the Scientific Council of the Center for Islamic Civilisation.
