Efforts to study the legacy of Pahlavon Mahmud are being expanded
At the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a number of important cultural and educational initiatives are being implemented in the country to search for Pahlavon Mahmud’s scholarly and spiritual legacy, return manuscripts associated with him to the homeland, conduct research, and publish them.
Within the framework of these initiatives, a discussion dedicated to the life and work of Pahlavon Mahmud was held at the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan with the participation of specialists, scholars, and representatives of the Center. The meeting comprehensively reviewed the work being carried out in accordance with presidential directives, the scholarly sources obtained, and future tasks.
Special attention was given to the practical efforts undertaken by the Islamic Civilization Center to restore Pahlavon Mahmud’s rubaiyat, search for manuscripts related to him, and widely promote his legacy. In particular, it was noted that a manuscript of his rubaiyat copied in the late nineteenth century had been brought from the United States, and that a digital copy of the work Kanz al-Haqa’iq, attributed to the thinker and preserved in the city of Mashhad, Iran, had been obtained.
Specialists also discussed the identification of Pahlavon Mahmud’s works that are still unknown to the public, their scholarly analysis, and publication. Plans were outlined to publish these works in the future, as well as to systematize and prepare for publication academic studies devoted to Pahlavon Mahmud’s life and creativity.
As emphasized, the image of Pahlavon Mahmud continues to hold special significance today as a symbol of devotion to the people, courage, and high spiritual perfection.
According to Raimboy Sherjonov, a deputy of the Khorezm Regional Council, the foundation of New Uzbekistan rests on the rich scholarly and spiritual heritage of great ancestors such as the Khwarazmiys, Berunis, Ulugbegs, and Pahlavon Mahmud:
“If the younger generation deeply understands the lives and paths of these great figures, the process of reaching the radiant heights of independent Uzbekistan will accelerate even further. Instilling this invaluable heritage in the hearts of young people is one of our most important tasks today.”
According to historical sources, Pahlavon Mahmud, born in 1247, demonstrated a vivid example of courage and patriotism during the period of the Mongol invasion. He traveled to India and showed exceptional bravery in freeing Khorezmian captives and returning them to their homeland. Over the course of his 79-year life, he remained in the memory of the people not only as a renowned wrestler, but also as a poet with profound philosophical views.
According to director and cinematographer, Honored Cultural Worker of Uzbekistan Hamidulla Hasanov, the image of Pahlavon Mahmud in the film is being portrayed by actors Farhod Mahmudov, Bobur Imomov, Kamron Hamdamov, and others:
“The ideas embodied in Pahlavon Mahmud’s rubaiyat have not lost their relevance even today and resonate in harmony with the development of independent Uzbekistan.”
During the discussion, the progress of work on the film Khiva Langari, dedicated to the life and work of Pahlavon Mahmud, was also reviewed. It was emphasized that the main goal is to convey the thinker’s invaluable spiritual heritage to a wide audience through published books and scholarly works.
